One Light Off Camera Flash
4 WEEK WORKSHOP

WITH INSTRUCTOR
Michelle Turner
Learn how to use your flash off camera to create and manipulate light in any situation, whether you are looking to lift harsh shadows during midday sessions or photograph your subjects after dark. We will cover the basics and then learn how to tweak the settings in-camera to enhance the ambient light in the scene. From light position and modifier selection to the inverse square law and bouncing the light off-camera to fill a room for more of a lifestyle approach, we will engage in a variety of creative light assignments which will give you the confidence you need to capture images with ease in any kind of light!

Learning OCF changes everything. Suddenly, there are no limits – you can make beautiful light anywhere.

“Game changer is an understatement. This class helped me fall head-over-heels in love with flash. Michelle’s insanely clear and thorough instructional material got me up and running in what felt like, well, a flash. ”
– KELLIE
WEEKLY WRITTEN & VIDEO LESSONS
LESSON ONE
We'll learn how to get started with flash, from setting up your equipment to sync speed, flash power, and using your flash as the sole source of illumination.
LESSON TWO
We will move beyond the basics and cover the direction of the light and how to position your light to achieve results that you love.
LESSON THREE
This week, you'll learn how to focus and control the light on your subject and background through feathering, modifier, and the inverse square law.
LESSON FOUR
You can use off camera flash to simulate the look of natural light – and this week, we'll cover how to do just that by controlling ambient light and using gels.
instructor tip:
Use a simple three-step process to get the perfect mix of flash and ambient light! 1) Set your camera's exposure based on how you want your background to look. 2) Turn on your flash and turn it up or down to achieve the perfect amount of light on your subject. 3) Tweak your perspective to get a portfolio-worthy image!

Will this course cover using two flashes at the same time: using one flash on camera, and the other off-camera?
Hi! I just registered for this class and am excited! I don’t own any OCF equipment – should I buy something now? Thank you!
When is the next run for this class?
Hey Kristi!
The course dates for the next run of this class have not yet been released. Please be sure to follow Click Photo School to receive the latest workshop and registration information at clickphotoschool.com.
Hi Kristi! This amazing workshop is scheduled to run next on June 20, and registration opens soon!
I am interested in doing “Rembrandt light” still lifes and indoor macro photography. I do not have flash eqpt yet, but believe I need a speedlight and large diffuser. I am not a portrait photographer. Is this class for me? I need eqpt. recommendations. Thanks for any guidance!
This workshop is a must-have! It is my number one recommendation for anyone wanting to learn flash or just master and become more efficient at using OCF. Michelle is an amazing teacher and will open your eyes to have easy and useful flash can be.
Thanks, Lori!! I’m so glad you enjoyed it!
Game changer is an understatement. This class helped me fall head-over-heels in love with flash. Michelle’s guidance of what gear to buy and why, along with her insanely clear and thorough instructional material got me up and running in what felt like, well, a flash. Her written material, videos, and feedback to course participants (I was studying along) was all I needed to start feeling like I could get satisfying results with flash. And enjoy the process of working with the extra equipment. Her own enthusiasm for flash is contagious and that no doubt helped me get over hesitation that had kept me back for far too long. If you are at all curious about flash, this class feels like the best place to start. Thank you, Michelle!
Thanks, Kellie! I’m so glad that you enjoyed the class!! :) I do LOVE flash, and I’m so glad that you’ve come to like it, too! :)
I completed a run of “Flash & Continuous Light” as a SA last year and loved every minute of it. I’ve had my eye on this course for a while now and wanted to see if the topics covered in this course were different or if the principals were the same but using the flash off camera before I went ahead and purchased this one.
Hi Allison! While the general concepts are the same (we’ll still cover things like the inverse square law and quality/quantity of light), the application will be completely different. :) With this one, we’ll focus on how to use the ISL and precise placement and modifiers (umbrellas and softboxes) to create beautiful light on location. We won’t cover TTL at all- all of this course is in manual (although once you are totally comfortable with manual flash you are more than welcome to use TTL if you’d like).
Hi Michelle,
Is this a class on how to set-up and use studio lighting (alien b lights, pro photo, etc.) or is this specifically only on how to use flash on your camera? Thank you!
Hi Kristy! We don’t do any work with a flash on the camera- this is 100% OFF camera light. You can use an Alien Bee or a Profoto light, but many people use a standard flash off camera with a trigger (in other words, you don’t need a “studio” light) to take this- a flash with a trigger works just fine). You would know that we don’t do a lot of “studio” work (although the concepts are universal and will work there as well)— almost everything we do in class is one light off camera on location.
How do I sign up for this class?
Hi Kristine!
The dates for the next run of this course have not yet been released. Be sure to follow Click Photo School for any upcoming workshop dates and registration information: https://www.clickphotoschool.com/click-photo-school-workshops
This class was great! I have always been a natural light photographer and had no desire to use flash. I didn’t like the look of it for the most part. I have been asked to do work for people where flash is a necessity however, so knowing this is one of my weak points, I decided to tackle it. I was thrilled to see Michelle’s class being offered, liked her work, and signed up for the class not knowing what to expect. Michelle was a great and very thorough teacher. She was very encouraging. I can’t believe how this has opened up a whole new area of photography that I had not realized that I was missing out on. I am interested in taking her On Camera Flash class after this, as I can see this as being the another step in growing in my hobby.
You can’t go wrong with doing the study along, as you always get so much out of the critiques, but if finances won’t allow the full participation you will still get so much from this class as a study along student.
Thanks so much, Jaime! I’m so glad you enjoyed the class! :)
Love, love, LOVED this course. It builds on things I have been learning while making me smart about off camera flash. I have lots of practicing to do to get good at it, but thanks to this course, I now have the basis to build on. Michelle is a great instructor. She knows her stuff and gives great, informed feedback. I often intend to listen to feedback given to other students in classes but other shiny objects or laziness keep me from doing so… In this class, I made a point of listening to the other feedback. I totally recommend this class and I will be looking for other classes to take with Michelle!
Thanks so much, Mila! I’m so glad you enjoyed the class! :)
I had never taken a ClickinMoms class before, but I knew that as a photographer (personal brand and family), OCF was the one huge area that I needed to learn about and master in order to become a well-rounded photographer knowledgeable and confident enough to take on any photo situation (for example, weddings were always outside of my abilities for that reason… not that I want to get into weddings anytime soon. ;) ).
I pored through the course overview and many wonderful reviews, and decided that this would be the best opportunity for me to learn and practice OCF. And just as I hoped it would it, it ABSOLUTELY was! The four weeks are stuffed full with key OCF concepts and a broad range of photography scenarios, and the weekly assignments are set up in just a way that they stretch your comfort level, but are all completely do-able with 1) the knowledge that Michelle presents for the week and 2) her regular online availability for questions and (wonderfully) detailed answers.
Given the technical aspect of learning OCF, versus the artistic focus of some other classes (I’m concurrently “studying along” on one such class), I’m sure that I would have only learned a fraction of what I did if I had studied along, and I would have been hugely frustrated when I ran into technical (equipment and otherwise) issues. For this reason, I would highly, highly recommend taking the course as a “full participation” attendee. It is *well* worth the money and I already know that my investment in this course will lead to many more opportunities that I couldn’t have taken on without having gone through it.
Michelle’s broad OCF expertise, detailed and coherent instruction, and constant availability for in-depth feedback and trouble-shooting help was all top-notch. I couldn’t imagine having a better course to learn about and become familiar with OCF. I’d very highly recommend this course to any photographer wanting to get into OCF, but nervous about making the jump!
Thanks so much for that amazingly detailed review, Laurie!! I’m so glad you enjoyed the class! :)
Michelle, absolutely – my pleasure! This has maintained the distinction of being the most valuable Click Photo class that I’ve taken, and I use the skills that I’ve learned on a regular basis. Many thanks again, and I hope to take another class from you in the future, or otherwise cross paths!
As a food photographer, this workshop was a game changer for me. I used to only use natural light in my food photography. However, I always had to raise my ISO in order to light my food good. Shooting food with an ISO of over 800 was not pleasing, because of all the noise I was getting. Yes, I could use a tripod to slow down the shutter speed, but using OCF creating your own light, is amazing. I wish I would have taken this workshop much earlier. Thank you Michelle for your amazing workshop and your feedback you have given us during the time we spent together. I can nothing but highly recommend this workshop.
Thanks so much, Iris! It was so wonderful having you in class, and I’m so glad you enjoyed it :)
I cannot understate how much of a gamechanger this course is! I came to it as a natural light portrait photographer who needed to use off camera flash for some situations where the ambient light just wasn’t quite enough. I’ve come away from it knowing very well how to do that, and with so many ideas for other ways I can incorporate off-camera flash into my work without having it look ‘flashy’. There are *so* many cool things that off camera flash can be used for that I never thought of. I’ve now probably tripled the number of situations I’m not terrified of handling the light in, and I have new ways to help my work stand out with beautiful light. I’m also catching family moments that I never would have been able to keep because we were ahppily playing somewhere and the light wasn’t ‘quite right’ without the use of flash. Michelle and the teacher assistants are generous with their time, encouragement, and teaching. I’ve learned way more than I anticipated, and I’m excited to play with it more!
Jenn, I’m so glad that you enjoyed the class! It was a pleasure working with you again…plus, you have the most cooperative kids EVER!! :)
I honestly cannot express how valuable this class has been to and will continue to be in the future. I hear people say they have no interest in flash because they “are a natural light photographer.” I am too. But this class will only make you a stronger natural light photographer and will also give you the ability to create light that looks entirely natural when natural light isn’t cooperating! Once you can do that, you are no longer limited by cloudy, rainy days or fleeting winter daylight. Give it a try. I believe you’ll be very thankful you did. The materials are thorough and simple to follow, Michelle and the helpers are so generous with the feedback and the knowledge they have, and the videos make everything so clear. I have learned so much about what to do and what not to do – all in 4 short weeks! It’s very empowering!
Donna, I’m going to miss seeing pics of your amazingly talented “should-have-been-a-model” pup!! :) Thank you so much for joining us in class– it was such a pleasure having you! :)
Oh, what a course!
If you prefer natural light and shadows, but wish you had even MORE control over your lighting…this is the class for you! I love natural light and how creates soft and hard shadows and contrast, however due to working FT during daylight hours and living in a state that is very cloudy, I felt limited by time and daylight availability. This OCF course opened up a new world of possibilities. In four short weeks, I graduated from using TTL flash only, to manually controlling my speedlight and using a modifier to achieve dramatic lighting or balance artificial and ambient light. Michelle provided us with an abundance of helpful PDFs and video tutorials to walk us through each and every step of instruction. She answered everyone’s questions in a timely manner and provided detailed explanations and troubleshooting that was invaluable. I still have so much to learn, however I now have a strong foundation and materials that will help me to continue my learning and growth regarding OCF. This class was a game changer!
Daylight availability is always such a downer, isn’t it (especially during the winter). I’m so glad we are coming into summer months now– I always want to cry when the sun sets at 4! I’m so glad that you are feeling comfortable with your flash…it can really take a weight off when you know you want to create but you are worried about the light!! It was great having you in class! :)
This class opened up a whole new world of light! I learned so much about flash and about rethinking light in general. Michelle gives you the confidence and the tools to be able to create the type of light that you envision in any situation. The information is useful to both professional and hobbyist photographers and Michelle is so encouraging and commented on every single question and post throughout the course. She is fantastic at presenting the information in a clear and concise manner and the important points are frequently reiterated, helping ingrain them into your thinking. If you love light and are constantly noticing the light around you and want to learn more, this is the perfect class! You don’t need a ton of gear to take this course as Michelle will help you get the most out of what you have and if you do have a variety of gear she will help you learn how to use that too. The only thing that was missing was more time!
I’m so glad that you are feeling more confident with your flash, Stacy– that’s music to my ears!! I wish it were longer, too…I can never get enough of light! :) Thanks again for joining me!!
If you are a hobbyist or a professional and you think “flash” is a dirty word, think again. 4 weeks with Michelle Turner will have you singing a totally different tune. Michelle is an instructor that loves her subject. The class is packed with pdf, videos and personal critiques. You come out with a solid foundation on how and when to use your flash. Another bonus is that you do not need a lot of fancy equipment. Understanding how to use natural light is vital to what we do as photographers. However, conquering your flash will open doors that were previously closed to you as a photographer. These days my flash stays in my bag – right next to my camera, wallet and lipstick. :-)
I highly recommend full participation, if a seat is still available. That said, this is probably the 1st class I believe you will learn just as much as a study along student just because of how generous Michelle is with her time in this workshop. Do something special for yourself and your craft. Make a memory – in a different light.
Lynette, it was so wonderful having you in class– I loved seeing the pics of your family and it has been an absolute joy being able to keep up with them on FB (great to see you at Click Away, too!!). :)
I highly recommend this class! I was a little nervous going into it as I have zero experience with flash (on or off camera). The materials are very easy to follow and the videos really help to explain the concepts. If you can really dedicate some time to practice each week, the feedback you receive from Michelle on any troubles you may be experiencing, any questions you have about a specific situation you were in, etc. is so valuable. For me, it helped me look at light as a whole in a different way and I find that it is helping me with lighting situations even without flash. Now, I want to carry around my flash and modifier everywhere I go! It is so fun learning what you can create..options are endless! Great teacher, great class.
Thanks so much, Jenna! It was great having you in class– I’m so glad that you enjoyed it!!
There’s a reason this class has so many glowing reviews – it’s really that excellent! If you have a desire to create work you’ll love in less than perfect natural light scenarios then it’s for you. And take it full participation if you can – Michelle is very accessible in the forums and she answered all of my random questions that I wouldn’t have been able to ask otherwise. This course is incredibly chock full of information but it’s broken down into manageable segments so it isn’t overwhelming. Four weeks ago I had only used my flash on camera – very rarely, and always with a sense of dread. I feel much more confident in my ability to create the light I want now than I did a month ago, and I’m just getting started. I would relate learning OCF to learning how to shoot in manual mode for the first time – there’s so much to think about and having an expert walk me through it was the only way I was going to learn it correctly. Michelle takes away your technical fears and she’s friendly, encouraging, and positive. I had no idea that off camera flash would open up such creative possibilities and actually be enjoyable! I’m hooked – I can’t wait to take her next class!
Thank you so much, Ashley! I really enjoyed having you in class and it was so great seeing your confidence with flash grow over the course of the workshop– it is really reflected in your work!! <3
This class will change the way you think about light in photography! Michelle gave me the ability to create beautiful light off-camera when I need it. I now realize how many times I was in situations where I was struggling with the lighting conditions and could have used off-camera flash. After taking this class I am able to recognize those situations before I even take a photo. Michelle is particularly good at showing how to balance ambient light sources with flash. Even if you think you are a “natural light photographer” this class is essential! There is something for everyone here: basic studio lighting techniques, tips for lifestyle shoots with flash, on-location lighting, and plenty of opportunity to experiment with your own subject matter. I found that this class really expanded my options for creative use of lighting. For the first time I really felt like I could imagine the kind of lighting I wanted and then create it myself.
There is so much information packed into this four-week class. Michelle has detailed PDFs and in-depth videos. Some of these videos contain amazing footage of her shoots filmed from a drone. It’s very beneficial to see a shoot from above and all sides to understand the set-up. I got so much great feedback in this class and loved the community feeling of the forum where we shared our weekly work. If you haven’t taken this class yet, sign up! This class is worth every penny.
Thank you so much, Carlin!! It was a pleasure having you in class!! <3
I am currently working my way through Week 4 assignment, and up to this point have learnt a wealth of information about OCF that will stand me in good stead in the future. Can’t count the number of”Ah-ha!” moments I’ve had in areas I’ve stumbled in previously when trying to teach myself via books or anything I could find on the internet! Michelle takes the “technical head scratching” out of learning OCF and teaches in a very clear and simple to understand way which is exactly what I craved on this subject. Have taken a workshop elsewhere prior to this workshop and fell asleep watching the videos as the tutor was really boring with his technical jargon…. I just switched off! Not so with any of this workshop.
I wanted to take this particular workshop (my first ever) because where I live, we have a lot of dark / overcast days and I wanted to learn to use flash to be able to better shape light in such conditions. However, this workshop covers so many more ways in which to use OCF than what I was purposefully looking for, including covering indoor and outdoor lighting (in all weather conditions), and also has a section on using gels creatively to achieve various backdrops and different looks. The whole breakout is an excellent teaching reference with a wealth of information – I have only scratched the surface with this description.
Michelle is an amazing tutor on the subject and I cannot recommend this course she teaches highly enough. Regarding value for money – I took the SA option and found this excellent value for money, but if I could have afforded the FP option, I would definitely have opted for this as I believe having your work evaluated and receiving actual pin-pointed trouble shooting feedback and advice on your work from Michelle would be a definite advantage in this respect. However, I am delighted with what I have gleaned as a SA student and so appreciative of what I have learnt, plus I did find that a lot of my queries came up and were answered in the Q & A sections.
I have given my printer a real workout this past 3 weeks printing off everything to do with this course and collating it all in a large folder with clear poly pockets for future reference, plus I have all the videos downloaded and feel happy that I have an excellent wealth of reference material on OCF (which I actually understand) to return to as and when I may need a refresher on the subject at any point.
I am delighted with my purchase and would say to anyone considering this course – don’t put it off! You miss many shooting opportunities where poor light would otherwise mean missed shooting opportunities but with OCF skills, you open the way for opportunities you may otherwise have missed.
Thank you so much, Wendy! I’m so glad you enjoyed the course!! :)
I’m a natural light photographer – at least this is how I’ve always defined myself. I decided to learn OCF because there are situations where the available light is non-existent or unsuitable, and I wanted to have a trick up my sleeve for that. In short, I took this class because I needed it, but I never thought I would actually love it. And after 4 short weeks, I’m realizing how wrong I was! OCF is opening a whole new world to me, and thanks to Michelle’s incredible teaching skills I was able to understand the basics so quickly! I’ve already captured many images that I love and that I could never had taken without OCF. I’m officially hooked, and fabulously inspired! Thank you so much Michelle for being such an amazing instructor!
It was so wonderful having you in class, Lisa! I really enjoyed all of your beautiful photographs– such joy! :)
Michelle is a Wonderful instructor! This class re-energized me and got me excited about improving my skills with off-camera flash. I will be re-reading and using these materials for a very long time. Despite using off-camera flash and a camera for years, I gained some very crucial understanding about how a flash affects your aperture and speed settings and how to work with difficult light! I will definitely be looking for more classes to take with Michelle!
I’m so glad that you enjoyed the class, Camille! :)
I am a studio photographer wanting to branch out into OCF in the field. Michelle’s class was a great way to start. I had not shortage of technical questions and she had no shortage of answers. Her weekly assignments were creative, inspiring and really helped me learn more about the effects of OFC. I may even sign up to take her class again just so I get access to all she has to offer. Thanks again Michelle for your encouraging words.
It was wonderful having you in class, Wheaton! :)
This was the class that really jumped my shooting techniques. It gave me a good understanding of the direction and type of light, the use of modifiers and the appropriate time to use OCF (always). I practiced my technique on some still life photos I was shooting and was amazed at the difference in emotion the light type and direction gave to inanimate objects. I just recently did a maternity shoot for a friend of mine, I was shooting during the golden hour, but in some areas it was very shaded, using OCF gave that pop of light on their faces that I needed to expose the photo correctly and bring out the color in the fall leaves around them. I impressed even myself!
So all that to say – TAKE THIS CLASS!
I’m so happy you enjoyed the class, Trish!! I’m so glad that you are fitting OCF into your work– it opens so many doors!! :)
Stop thinking about taking this class and go sign up! Michelle is an incredible teacher and the ability to use OCF is a game changer. She does an excellent job explaining different styles, techniques, and equipment options. I hesitantly signed up for this class and am so thrilled I did! The options for OCF are endless. I would have described myself as a natural light photographer, but now I will certainly incorporate flash into my sessions. She beautifully showed us how to make flash look natural and it will be instrumental in my lifestyle photography. Now, there are so many new things I want to try! You will not regret investing in this class.
Thanks so much, Danielle! It was absolutely wonderful to have you in class– I can’t wait to see how you use OCF!!
I took Michelle’s OCF as SA and it was a great experience so far! I never before used a flash and promote myself like natural light photographer but really wanted to learn how to use OCF (especially after shooting my last wedding reception and family formals, I just needed these knowledge!).
It was a great materials, Michelle is a really gifted teacher who explained everything step by step (from moments of set up flash to more complicated light situations and how to deal with it). I love how Michelle explained everything really good way with real structure and put out all main points and repeated them for best memory.
Also there tons of video materials so you can see in reality how to archive different look and how to work with different lighting scenarios. What a great course! No matter what you specialised in (it can be helpful for newborns, portraiture, lifestyle sessions, studio work, weddings, events and all styles of photography!)
I can’t say more then BIG thank you, Michelle!
Now just practice, practice and practice! :)
It was wonderful having you in class, Olga! You will love experimenting with OCF during weddings! Thanks so much for joining us in class!!
This workshop took me from wishing I could shoot OCF to actually doing it. I already owned a Creative Live flash workshop, but although it contains a lot of great information, it really go me no closer to actually shooting OCF. Michelle’s workshop gives you all the information you need combined with what I think was a perfect format for learning to use your gear. Weekly assignment submissions are critiqued via assignment videos, and for me, this was the perfect way to learn. Using OCF really seems to be all about problem solving for each and every unique environment, and the videos walk you through a wide variety of scenarios teaching you how to problem solve in them so that you will know how to problem solve in your own unique set ups. I took this as a study along participant and learned so much from the full participation students, the weekly teaching videos, the weekly assignment videos, and the weekly pdf’s. Learning OCF is really all about practice, practice, practice which means I have a long ways to go in the process, but I am excited to have been propelled in the right direction by this awesome workshop!
I’m so glad that you enjoyed the class, Kim! :)
We just finished up the OCF class with Michelle. It was such a great class! The PDF material and videos are worth every penny. Michelle is also a great communicator and has a wealth of knowledge that she opens up to us. I learned a lot about flash and how to use it in different situations. I TOTALLY recommend taking her class if you wish to expand your light/flash knowledge. :)
Thanks so much, Amanda! I’m so glad that you enjoyed the class! :)
Wow. I learned so much. Michelle is a natural born teacher. I will be referencing these materials over and over again. I had the capability of OCF for about 6 months before this class and was just tinkering around. Now I have the foundation to get command of OCF and the possibilities are endless. If you want to make your flash your friend, take this class! And you won’t be cheating on your available light self!
Thanks Annmarie! I love the “you won’t be cheating on your available light self” — that cracked me up! :)
I also took this class in February and it was everything I expected a CM class to be. The instructor Michelle is a natural teacher and she really breaks things down in bite sized portions. And she really encourages you to play. Not to get bogged down with the technicalities but take time to make it fun, then come back and take on the technical stuff! Which really helps you not get frustrated as you learn.
I took this as a Full Time Participant and to me it was so worth it, for the critique and help Michelle and the TAs give each and every student.
The list of gear is not long but the possibilities are endless. If you ever find yourself wishing for non-washed out skies, saturated colors, portable light in dark caves…this is your class!
I have read several books, watched videos, read online tutorials but not until this class did it all make sense!
I also took this class during the February run, and I highly recommend it!
Michelle’s class has been amazingly applicable! I took the class because I had encountered times when natural light was not enough. I was amazed to learn how off-camera flash can help me get the shots I want whenever and wherever I need to shoot! I can shoot at times or in locations that I would have avoided before the class, because I have so much more control over the light. Just in the last couple of weeks I’ve used OCF for a large-group outdoor event at sunset, for cast photos for a school musical, and for indoor maternity photos when the client’s house was just a little darker than I wanted.
Michelle is an excellent teacher–supportive and upbeat and able to make such helpful suggestions. I really appreciated that she incorporated creative shooting along with the practical uses of OCF to help us really see more possibilities with flash– and it was SO FUN! I have taken quite a few CM classes, and this is one of the best!
This workshop was great!!!!!! I took it during February with a really great group of ladies. I didn’t quite know what to expect and asked quite a few questions before I signed up to make sure I had all the gear (triggers, brolly box, gels, lightbenders, not all of which are required) and was ready to go. Michelle Turner answered all the questions, before I even enrolled in course. Once the workshop started, Michelle was always on top of things and was extremely helpful. I can’t say enough good things about her!
As far as the class and material – it was a ton of fun! Quite a bit of the material is for outside shots (balancing ambient light with flash light, using OCF during mid-day sun, taking pictures at sunset), which in winter in Ohio is probably not the best, BUT she encouraged us to be creative and try out new and different things (using the flash as your sole light source, using gels, snoots and light benders). :) I have some really wonderful and interesting shots from the workshop. Definitely worth taking!!!!
Since the end of the workshop, I’ve started working with OCF outside (the weather has improved immensely here!) and it’s still amazing the things you can do with it!! I’d totally recommend taking this course! Using OCF definitely adds to your bag of tricks!
I took Michelle’s class in February and it has helped me immensely, especially in the crummy spring weather we have been having here. It has literally saved me now several times with indoor photo shoots where I was able to use my OCF flash to either simulate natural light streaming in through a window, or used my flash as fill light so that I could get gorgeous window-backlit images with well exposed faces and with keeping my ISO low. Before the class, I would have either cancelled my photo session or headed there with a huge pit in my stomach, praying for the clouds to disappear…
And that is not even mentioning all the different looks you can produce with OCF flash to make your portfolio or client viewing gallery more diverse. I highly, highly recommend this class to anyone who is looking to be able to work in diverse lighting situations and to be able to control the light they have.
I loved this class! Michelle is a natural teacher and did an incredible job with this content. I normally try and teach myself as much as possible and am pretty frugal about spending money, but this class was worth every penny. I do not think I could have learned something as technical as OCF from a book!
Up to this point, I have always used natural light and was a bit intimidated about flash. This class gave me a solid understanding of how flash works off camera in different situations. Though I still am mostly a natural light shooter, I can now confidently set up my flash on client shoots to capture images during non-ideal times of day (ie, full sun at 2pm, after the sun is gone at sunset, etc.) and also use OCF to finesse my lighting indoors. Michelle goes over all the gear (from triggers, to modifiers, to gels) and makes difficult concepts easy to understand. Her materials are well written and I very much enjoyed reading through them each week. I had LOTS of Ah-HA! moments in her class.
