In 2003 D’Ann Boal graduated with a master’s degree in education, but it wasn’t until her son was born and they moved to the Caribbean that she picked up a camera and never looked back. Photographing their quiet life by the sea inspired her photography journey. Today she runs a photography boutique specializing in newborn, child and family photography. Living on a farm in Colorado with her husband, son and daughter, she is inspired by capturing the light and magic of her children’s lives. She treasures her daily cup of jasmine tea, hikes with family, and long swims in the sunshine.

I love D’Ann’s photography. Have been following her for some time now and when I saw the breakout I couldn’t resist to learn from her. I had been guessing how she creates certain images, but now was a chance to learn first hand. And the breakout didn’t disappoint! D’Ann is a great instructor who didn’t hold back any of her secrets. Thank you to D’Ann for another amazing breakout! I was wondering whether or not I would learn much from this breakout after having taken the Understanding Light workshop but I definitely learned quite a lot and had other information I learned in Understanding Light reinforced. I loved that she showed us how she edits her images not just using presets and actions. Some of the techniques really blew me away. I am really excited to put all I learned into practice.

I think my big thing is I love, absolutely LOVE your images. your out of camera is amazing and the warm paintery (new word) feel as well as the magic you put in post is amazing! I took this class to see how you do that . I only work in Lightroom (other than adding watermarks or head swaps in photo shop) so seeing all you do in Lightroom that I didn’t know about blew my mind, the gradient the masking that I didn’t know, I need to keep replaying. I haven’t touched the photo shop side of your edits but hav added the gradients of light to dark and dark to light and see a huge difference already.
My goal before was to just be clean, tact sharp and correct color to the real moments I try to capture between the posed shots the family books me for, but you got me balancing on beds, desks, bathtub edges, and since I am trying to learn studio lighting- as I natural light photographer I felt like I was giving up, but seeing that you use it as well gives me more self confidence in learning and creating and improving. thank you!

Everything was so well put together and D’Ann shared some really creative editing techniques using custom overlays that I look forward to trying. I have never really enjoyed shooting in my home and struggled to find the right light/angles to make me happy with not only the story behind it, but the beauty within the image itself. It goes without saying that D’Ann is an incredible artist. But what I found especially wonderful about this breakout was discovering her clear, actionable teaching style. D’Ann explains everything so well that you understand exactly how she has achieved the images she shares. I found myself rewatching segments to really lock that information away in my mind. Absolutely amazing breakout!! I have learned to appreciate the light coming into through my windows instead of being frustrated by it. I am doing a 365 Photo Challenge of my kids and this breakout was a much needed breath of fresh air to reignite my creativity and keep that momentum going. I am very much a beginner and only engage in photography as a hobby. Without a camera, software, or any professional tools, I still gleaned so much from this class!! It was amazing to me how D’ann interacted so well with such as diversely skilled classroom (and so many students). I hesitated to sign up since it was my first and only photography class and I often struggle to navigate my way through virtual learning, however D’ann was extremely organized and made it an error-proof/user friendly class in that regard. I have somewhat high standards for medical professional and educators since I am in that field myself, however I was completely blown away by how personable and knowledgeable D’ann came across not only in the curriculum but in the feedback as well. She gave higher level feedback to the higher level students and she also modified the feedback for a beginner like me. She was able to take into consideration the tools and skill level of all of her students. That’s really impressive!! I especially enjoyed that her discussion board was open to everyone, as it allowed me to learn from my classmates. I would recommend taking any class from D’ann since it was so well done! I don’t think you could go wrong!!

This was my first breakout class and I LOVED it! Even though I didn’t participate as much as I had hoped (only because I didn’t have enough free time at home), I got way more than my money’s worth! The exercices made me move out of my confort zone, both when shooting and in post. The videos are great, and I keep watching them over and over again as I try to edit. Finally and probably most importantly, D’Ann is extremely responsive and generous of her time. The few questions I asked or photos I posted received a reply almost instantly, even when I posted them really really late at night. I will definitely look into more classes or breakout sessions by D’Ann.

I have really enjoyed this Breakout! How she uses light to illuminate her subjects is amazing. I also really enjoyed seeing the pullbacks of how she took her pictures and seeing her post processing thought process. Having the camera settings named on the pictures was very helpful too. Her photographs, how she uses light and demonstration and explanation of everything was extremely helpful and inspiring.

I am a not a novice photographer but have really gotten so much out of this breakout. The materials are so well organized and D’s videos are amazing. I am learning some things that I did not know and watching how she creates her gorgeous images has inspired me to run around my house with my camera. My kids are not that excited but I am getting some wonderful keepsakes and having fun. I highly recommend this breakout to anyone at any level. This was a great breakout! D’Ann is wonderful teacher, and I loved seeing how she creates the magic in her images from start to finish. It also, definitely helped me see how I could take photos in literally every room in my house by just paying attention to the light, and the placement of my subjects. The editing videos were also very helpful, as D’Ann shares both how she brings more light into her photos, as well as how she enhances the light she has already captured. As a military family we move every few years and while our previous house had tons of beautiful natural light and huge windows, our current home has tiny windows and frustrating light. D’Ann offers a variety of creative photo setups that anyone can adapt to their own home. She also provides detailed editing videos that accompany her shooting videos, which have been a very enjoyable bonus to the course. This breakout has been amazing. Just the instruction on light and how to see it and the different types is enough to make it worth it — I have been paying attention to how light hits my subject so much more already! I also love that it is inspiring me to see my home in a different more beautiful way. Watching her edit has also made me realize there’s sooooo much potential in an image I just have to learn to see it. I’m amazed by all her edits teach me.
Then of course there’s the interaction! I was so excited to be able to do this live and talk to the instructor, but I took some of the suggestions she gave me and reshot something and was so impressed by how big the change was with that small tweak !
It has been invaluable for me and I would recommend this to anyone. I believe it would reignite any creative rut just simply working room by room finding the magic in your very living space you have been missing daily!

I loved this breakout from D’Ann! She brings just the right mix of pure inspiration and technical advice to ensure that everyone can walk away having learned something. I particularly appreciated a look at the behind the scenes – the set-ups, the approach D’Ann takes to composing her frames and the way she explores multiple angles in each situation. Through these videos and all of her rooms, D’Ann finds a way to share a really broad array of lighting, shooting and editing techniques. It’s hard to pick a favorite room, but I really loved the bedroom lamp light one because it’s just so tricky to do well and D’Ann’s images are magical!

This breakout has been just what I needed to get out of a rut! With all of the pandemic craziness in the world it’s been hard for me to pick up my camera. I’ve been taking pictures of my kids (sports mostly) for years and have somewhat taught myself, thru trial and error, what works and what doesn’t. Recently I picked up Lightroom, and as with the DSLR, was teaching myself – mainly because I couldn’t find the time after work, kids’ practices/games, and raising 4 kids. With the Coronavirus pandemic, I found myself with more free time, so I figured I’d take a course to help with my picture taking and editing abilities.
I’m just a few lessons into this breakout and I have learned so much from D’Ann in such a short period of time. I especially like how she talks you through her editing processes so you’re not left guessing why she is making a particular editing choice. She is knowledgeable and encouraging and I look forward to all the beautiful pictures my new skills will bring.

D’Ann’s breakout is everything I needed right about now. With all of us stuck at home I was running low on inspiration and ideas. The pdf and the shooting/editing videos are packed with detailed information, D’Ann holds nothing back and shares her complete workflow.
D’Ann beautifully shows how we can make amazing portraits in the most ordinary settings! Not only she teaches how to use natural light but also how the most “dreaded” lamp light can be used to created powerful storytelling images. I will going back to this breakout many more times!

Hi my name is Carlee Dock and I live in Colorado too! I am an EI Speech Language Pathologist and i love my job. I hope to get my PhD someday or take a different route with writing curriculum. I am interested in taking photos just for fun. I do not know a single thing about anything photography related. I am not aspiring to be a photographer. That said, I have zero skills and would like to learn a little more. I was wondering 1) if I’m not financially reliant on this hobby, then how much money should I put into it? 2) if I don’t have a camera or any editing software, then could I still use some techniques from your class with pics from my iPhone? 3) if equipment was necessary, then which devices would be the most affordable and best for learning? I know that’s a lot! Thanks in advance for your help. I reached out to you because you’re in CO and you were an educator. My parents are retired teachers and here I am a therapist, so I felt we had some common ground.
Hello Carlee! Thanks for your inquiry. :)
I think the investment you want to make just completely depends on how much you’re loving photography and how far you want to take it. You can do a whole lot with just an iPhone and an understanding of light. Fancy lenses and camera bodies really help with things like sharpness, depth of field, clarity – and just generally having complete control over your storytelling, but they aren’t 100% essential to being a great photographer. When I’m out with my family during the day, I’ll use my iPhone and have some great images from my phone that I love. So your investments doesn’t necessarily need to be high. But as you get more and more into photography you may find you want to have more control with a fun lens or a camera body with more capability than your phone.
Yes, you can still learn techniques from this breakout even if you don’t have editing software like Lightroom and Photoshop. I’ll be photographing in several different rooms in my home. You will get to see how I use light, where I place my subject, how far away I stand from them and how I set up simple creative scenes.
If you do want to get a camera body and a nice lens, I would recommend going to your local camera dealer (like Mike’s Camera) and asking them to show you options for someone just starting out. It’s so difficult to just tell you the type of body to buy and the best lens, because it’s such personal preference. That said, I shoot with Nikon (I have the D850 body) and have a collection of Nikon lenses (which you’ll see in this breakout). When I was starting out I had the D750 and I’ve upgraded from there as I’ve gotten further down my photography journey. If you wanted just one very versatile lens, the Sigma 35mm 1.4 is a fun lens and great quality.

This was amazing. Any level, Any camera, Any style. I origanally was interested in just the lamp light photos thinking I know the other stuff. Boy was I wrong. I have learned and referred back to these videos multiple times. These videos are so easy to watch and learn and see how to use light to your advantage without all the extra stuff. I am truly blown away by the ease of these. It totally made me feel comfortable when trying these styles on my own. D is such an amazing teacher and photographer.
