16 thoughts on “Why it Works”

  1. It has taken me MONTHS to write this review because I really wanted to dive deep into the material and all I can say is – WOW!!! First, the lineup of all-star instructors is just amazing. To learn from these rockstar photographers and mentors all in one course is an amazing opportunity. But the material is so well thought out, comprehensive, and will keep you learning for months (and years) to come. It can be hard to find great material for more advanced photographers but this course has it in spades. There’s so much to think through and the frameworks provided in this course will give any artist – regardless of level of experience – new areas to dive into. There is SO MUCH packed into this course and I’ve really enjoyed slowly making my way through the material, digging deep to understand “why it works”

  2. This is the course I never knew I needed! Never before have I taken such a thought-provoking, comprehensive course. My favourite was being able to learn how Sarah and others saw (and felt!) images created by various artists. I have been using the tools in the advanced image analysis guide, and it has helped me understand why I create. It has even led to some personal discoveries. Sarah, thank you for pouring your heart, time, and 20+ years of experience into this labour-of-love workshop. I now have a refreshing new way of seeing and thinking when I capture my family and the world.

  3. Are you looking to grow as a photographer? Then this course is for you! I absolutely believe there is no better way to learn and grow than knowing how to analyze your images and how to provide and receive critiques. The process and outcome of doing this is eye opener and satisfying. I was pretty impressed with the detail of the “Step by Step Guide to Image Analysis” and all the deep dive self-analysis modules developed by Sarah. Digging into all these details will definitely help any photographer improve their photography skills. Two of my favorite parts about this course were the critique video with images from these 4 talented ladies whom I admire (Meg, Megan, Twyla, and Robin), and their awesome powerlists, where they share amazing tips. A must-take course!

  4. I am so glad that I took this class. It is always fascinating to me what makes an image work and how audience connect to images emotionally. It is so amazing to be able to get insights from all these ladies who I admire and respect so much. Image deconstruct and critiques are my absolute favorite way to learn so I enjoyed this course so much. I would highly recommend this course to anyone who would like to learn how to read an image and then to create a stronger image!

  5. This is a really unique course. It provides an amazing framework to learn to critically examine your own work and the work of peers. Sarah has gone above and beyond to create detailed worksheets to guide you through this process and expanded the framework with prompts to improve your photography skill. This course would be helpful for those just starting out to use these prompts as daily exercises to practice shooting with different settings, lighting, focal lengths etc. However, the course is also helpful for more seasoned photographers particularly if you’re working on narrowing down a set for Click Pro application or photo competition. On top of that, the live critique with a stellar group of female Click photographers will help you understand how to expand the layers of your work as you deep dive into the minds of these artists and their portfolios. I will be using the content from this course for a long time to come as I challenge myself to grow as an artist.

  6. This course left me in awe. I have learned so much and basically a whole new way of thinking. I needed this and I know that using this in my work is going to help me so much. I love the idea of taking the time and thinking things thrugh and analyzing what works and why it works. It has given me so many new ideas. The video going through all of these amazing artists work is incredible and I have already watched it twice. So many aha moments. Totally recommend!

  7. While I’ve taken many courses with CPS, I found this one to be so unique. While many course offer quick tips to achieve certain photographic aesthetics or learn a new skill, this course is geared more toward photographic analysis. While there are some instant actionable steps presented in the materials, it is more about learning to read a photograph, your personal tendencies in the craft, and discovering strengths/areas for growth. The way the content is presented offers opportunities for continuous analysis over years of growth.

    1. Rebecca, your perspective on this means so much; we very much wanted to come at this in a new way and offer a program that could help artists grow in new and unconventional ways, and I’m so appreciative to hear that you’re finding it helpful. And YES to “continuous analysis over years of growth” – that’s entirely the intent; this should be a course that’s never “completed” and is always available for you to revisit whenever you are ready to refocus or explore opportunities for new directions to pursue. Thank you so much for sharing your perspective.

  8. Learning to analyze your work and others is an essential tool no matter where you are in your photography journey. Sarah has done an excellent job putting together the material that outlines this process. The video, worksheets, and written analysis are so helpful. I highly recommend taking this self-paced course! Especially if you are looking to grow as a photographer.

    1. Kristin, your review made my day – thank you so much for this. ❤️ I’m happy to hear that the material resonates and is helpful. It’s definitely active learning, but as you note, for those ready to grow (and willing to put in the time to do it!), the process is here waiting for them.

  9. Ever since building my Click Pro Elite portfolio, I’ve been searching for a project that could push my photography forward in a similar way. Building that portfolio forced me to thoroughly analyze my work and in doing so led to one of the greatest periods of growth in my journey. I just know that taking my time with this course is sure to lead to similar results. Also, the workbook is a note takers dream; designed to go through in your own way, making it great for newbies and experienced photographers alike. So whether you’re working on mastering the technical basics or striving to create images with more impact, this course is sure to hone your artistic eye.

    1. Hi Leah! Well I could not ask for more than this. I love that you’re diving into the workbook and finding it a useful tool; I know that once you reach a certain level, it can be challenging to figure out where and how to push yourself to keep progressing, and I wrote so much of this with that very consideration in mind (in fact, I keep thinking of new things to add – and adding them – so be sure to check in for updates! Also, definitely let me know if you think of opportunities where I might flesh things out further to better facilitate growth in new directions!). Thanks for taking the time to share your thoughts; I am grateful.

  10. This course has been absolutely amazing!! I have looked up to each of these photographers for many years, and I am so thankful for all of their wisdom and technical expertise they have shared! I am looking forward to the growth that I know will come to my own work as I continue to learn and implement all of this great information… I HIGHLY recommend any photographer to take this course!

    1. Hi Megan! Your enthusiasm is infectious; thank you for such a glowing review! I agree that the insights shared were pretty amazing, and I’m so glad to hear that you are finding the course so valuable. Your recommendation means a lot, and your commitment to learning and growing in your photography is inspiring.

  11. Wow this course is absolutely jam-packed. I feel like I could spend months soaking up all the information and doing the exercises. I loved the instructors’ Power Lists with insider information on their favourite lenses, editing shortcuts and inspirations and the video critique of each other’s work :)

    1. Thank you for this review, Jenny! It’s super encouraging to know you’re finding the course useful, and I’m glad you’re loving the Power Lists and all the insider tips (I loved compiling them and found it fascinating to see their answers side by side!). Definitely *do* take months working through it all and enjoy the journey! The idea is that this material can meet you wherever you are at any given point in your growth and evolution; I hope you’ll continue to get a lot out of it!
