Week One

Inspiration and Theme Development

This week, we will reflect on what speaks to you as an artist. We will explore the foundations of conceptual photography by examining how we can use imagery to communicate ideas, emotions, and narratives. You will identify sources of inspiration and begin developing a personal concept for a three image series.

Week Two

Explicit vs. Implicit Meanings and Color Science

You will examine how photographs communicate meaning through both explicit and implicit visual cues. Through image analysis and discussion, you will learn to distinguish between what is directly shown in a photograph and the deeper ideas, emotions, and interpretations it may suggest. This week we will also introduce the fundamentals of color science and color psychology. We will explore how color relationships and lighting can influence the viewers interpretation of an image and reinforce conceptual themes.

Break Week

Refresh and Reflect

This week is designed to give you time to catch up and absorb the material. Students will participate in a round table critique over each other’s work via Zoom.

Week Three

A Staged Narrative and Story Driven Composition

During week three, you will explore how we can use staging, direction, and composition to construct visual narratives. You will learn how subjects, props, camera settings, and lens choice can be intentionally arranged to communicate a story or idea and to balance our frame.

Week Four

Advanced Editing Techniques

In our final week together, you will explore advanced editing techniques that support meaning rather than simply improving the technical quality of the image. This week will help you shape the final emotional impact your images have on the viewer.

In 2003 D’Ann Boal graduated with a master’s degree in education, but it wasn’t until her son was born and they moved to the Caribbean that she picked up a camera and never looked back. Photographing their quiet life by the sea inspired her photography journey. Today she runs a photography boutique specializing in newborn, child and family photography. Living on a farm in Colorado with her husband, son and daughter, she is inspired by capturing the light and magic of her children’s lives. Kirsty is inspired by the simple, everyday stories of life around her. She looks for connection and depth when making images and believes that curiosity is her greatest creative strength. That curiosity leads her to follow the noise of drums to see what’s happening around a corner and she is frequently delighted by the sights that greet her.

Kirsty composes intuitively and uses light to make sure her images are fully infused with the feelings of being right there with her. She tries to make sure each day is sprinkled with a healthy dose of creative practice, whether that be on the school run, or while cooking dinner, and she fully believes that intentionality filters intuitively into her images. Ashley Mosier is a senior photographer from Missouri who specializes in creating organic, candid senior photo experiences with an editorial edge. After spending fifteen years in the beauty industry as a hairstylist and makeup artist, Ashley combined that experience with her love of art, fashion, and photography and turned it into her dream job. She lives with her husband, two boys and two spoiled dogs, eats too many Reese’s, and enjoys camping.

Leslie Crane has been an on-location and studio portrait photographer in the Minneapolis-St. Paul, Minnesota area for the past 12 years. She specializes in portraiture of children, families, high school seniors, musicians, and creative professionals for her clients, as well as fine art and nature photography for her soul. A former opera singer and music teacher, Leslie is also a producer for classical music public radio programs and a homeschool mom.

Mickie DeVries resides in West Michigan close to the beauty of the Lake Michigan shoreline. She is married to her husband Luke and has two teens. Mickie’s work is centered around documenting her children, and she also teaches Unlocking the Magic of Photoshop & FUNdamentals of Photoshop through Click Photo School.

Robin Fox is a lifestyle and commercial photographer located in Ontario, Canada. A wife and mother to four children, she is grateful for the support and encouragement of her loved ones. about your presenter

Amanda Ruzicka is a part time newborn and family photographer and full time mama. She lives in the countryside of Wisconsin with her hard working hubby, two sweet little boys, two big fur babies, and a very personable fish. She loves going for hikes in the woods, campfires, pontooning on the lake, and any time spent together with her family.

Lori Pickens is married to her best friend Nathan and they are raising two crazy twin little boys and their sweet and sassy little sister in a small West Virginia town. Lori is a database geek by day, and a lover of all things photographer pretty much every other moment of the day. She has a quote in her office that says, “More ideas than time”, which pretty much sums up the theme of her life.

Amanda and Lori met when they were both looking for a roommate for Click Away 2018. They were paired up and realized they had so much in common. They started texting and talking every day, bonded at Click Away, and a wonderful friendship continues to grow to this day.

Elements of Design covers the major components of artistic composition and discusses how photographers can use these elements to maximize an image’s aesthetic appeal and influence its psychological significance. This course focuses on using distinct compositional elements to help you define your vision before you press the shutter, to increase the energy and interestingness of your images, and to ultimately broaden and improve your overall portfolio. We’ll discuss the elements of design, undertake a personal portfolio evaluation, and engage in upper-level analysis of several of the most critical aesthetic components used in composition. The instructor will remain available to you for all five weeks and will hold a webcam based “office hour” for live Q&A, demonstrations, and discussions during break week.

Prerequisites

All participants must have a mastery of technical basics (exposure, aperture, shutter speed, ISO, etc) and proficiency with their preferred processing software. Participants need not shoot in manual regularly but must be comfortable doing so. We will not be covering or critiquing technical basics in this course.
